At road.cc, every product is thoroughly tested, as long as you need to understand its working conditions correctly. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists and we believe they are objective. Although we strive to ensure that the opinions expressed are supported by facts, the comments are essentially an informed opinion, not a final ruling. We will not deliberately try to destroy anything (except locks), but we do try to find any weaknesses in the design. The total score is not just the average of the other scores: it reflects the function and value of the product-the value depends on how the product compares with items of similar specifications, quality, and price.

Good grades are more common than bad, because fortunately good products are more common than bad.

The Hunt 36 UD carbon fiber spoke wheel is a medium-deep, lightweight wheel with rim brakes designed for fast driving. Carbon spokes have excellent stiffness and, unlike some spokes, can be replaced in the event of a collision. Even on windy days, the depth of 36 mm can be used perfectly, making the wheel assembly ideal for road racing. The wheels are also provided with steel bearings instead of these rather special CeramicSpeed bearings to save a lot of cost.

Pull the wheel out of the box and you will immediately notice how light the wheel set is. At road.cc Scales of Truth they weigh 1,320 grams. Considering that we weighed them with Hunt tubeless tape installed, this seems to be consistent with Hunt’s claim of 1,295 grams. For the highly competitive 36mm wheels, although not all, they will definitely make them feel lively when climbing hills.

The test group had CeramicSpeed bearings, which increased the price by 320 pounds. If you don't participate in the competition, this may be a good place to save money-I have started using Hunt's standard EZO steel bearings. In fact, the difference is very small. But if you pursue the maximum possible performance, wow, these bearings seem to distort the physical properties-they work out of the box, rotate effortlessly, are buttery smooth, and stay the same, seeming to accelerate rather than decelerate.

After a month of testing, I have managed to accumulate about 1,200 kilometers on the wheels, so it is difficult to determine any meaningful ideas about the durability of the bearings, but even after using them under some very severe conditions, they do feel fresh .

In addition to the wheel itself, after installing the tubeless tape, you can also get a set of kebabs and carbon brake pads in the box.

Kebabs are very light, made of nice materials such as brass cams and stainless steel springs, and look smart. My only complaint is that Hunt chose to put these in a box instead of a set of tubeless valves. Maybe it’s only me who has a lot of kebabs and obviously lacks spare tubeless valves, but for Hunt, it would be a good choice to include a set of valves that are known to be the right length and have good compatibility with the rim. Many tubeless wheels Yes, such as Scribe Race-D, include them as part of the package-even if the price is lower.

Of course, if you ask Hunter to supply and install tires, then this will not be a problem, and you will also get the sealant included in the price, so it is worth considering. Another benefit of installing tires is that you can avoid potential troubles caused by incorrectly installing rim tape, just like on this set.

I chose to install a set of 28mm Hutchinson Fusion 5 tires. Starting from the rear, I popped the tires onto the rims with relative ease, added sealant and inflated and fixed the tires with a track pump.

Hunt calls its rim bed design "H-Lock". According to my experience, I can ensure that the profile is sealed and seated well even during the first installation.

Moving on to the front wheel, I noticed a few bubbles under the tape; this is not uncommon, sometimes the air pressure of the first inflation is enough to secure it correctly, so I started to install the tires. Unfortunately, the tires did not hold air, but whizzed out from the drain holes near the spokes of the rim, indicating that the air is definitely the opposite of the tape.

After removing the tires and carefully inspecting the wheels, the reason is clear: the tape is on the side of the rim in some places, and it is not stuck in other places. This is disappointing for wheels of any price, the only option is to reinstall the rims.

After re-fixing the wheels, the tires are quickly and easily in place again, without other problems.

Measuring 26 mm on the outside and 19 mm on the inside, the rim width is very modern, even if not as wide as some of the latest disc brake wheels. This means that the wheels should fit in some older frames, but with more limited clearance, while perfectly matching the popular wider tires. The 28mm tires I use are exactly 28mm in size on Hunts. They are beautiful in appearance and are not as "swollen" as they are on narrow rims.

As the name suggests, the 36 UD has a depth of 36 mm, which has some aerodynamic advantages over classic box-section rims while keeping the weight to a minimum. A further positive factor is that rims of this depth can be used on windy days without having to worry about falling into the gutter like using a deeper design; I went out and walked around on some "sturdy wind" days and they handled it well .

One aspect that makes 36 UD stand out from the competition is the use of carbon spokes. Many manufacturers glue the spokes to the rim or hub, which makes repairing the wheel extremely difficult, and even in a fairly minor collision can result in astronomical repair costs. Hunt overcomes this problem by using the so-called "Taperlock" technology, which simply means that the carbon spokes have metal ends, or "spindles," that are mechanically connected during the curing process. This means that they can be modified and replaced in the traditional way, which is a very good thing.

However, you may notice that the carbon spokes do not appear in the replacement or spare parts section of the Hunt website. Hunter would rather solve any problems by himself and let the workshop technicians receive training in this area. The wheels are covered by Hunt's H_Care, and the first car owner can benefit from free collision replacement, which is especially beneficial for racers and accident-prone people.

> Should you buy carbon fiber wheels? What are they best suited for?

The main advantage of using carbon spokes is the lateral stiffness, and the unpleasant side-to-side movement of the wheel makes it rub against the brake pads. Hunt claims that compared with 36 carbon wide Aero wheels, the use of carbon fiber in this area has increased by 30.16%, which is not completely soft and has more spokes to guide.

On the road, it is obvious that this is not just a marketing conversation. I have set up the brakes within a few millimeters of the rim, trying to get them to rub, but even the toughest saddle sprint I can conjure does not cause a noticeable bend. This is probably the hardest wheel I have ever used, which makes the weight of 1,295 grams even more impressive. Usually, the problem with particularly hard wheels is uncomfortable on rough roads, but Hunts does not feel too harsh, especially when paired with 28mm tubeless tires.

The carbon fiber braking surface has made great progress in the past ten years. The braking here is consistent without any accidental "grabbing", although like all carbon fiber wheels, it does need to spin one or two when the conditions are wet. Water can be removed only once.

The 16 radial spokes at the front and the 21 spokes at the rear. Double cross spokes on the drive and non-drive sides are paired with Hunt’s aluminum alloy wheels.

The rear part is engaged every 7.5 degrees, which is very lively and very suitable for winding races with low-speed corners. In this case, the acceleration is instantaneous. To reduce weight, the hub body is also made of aluminum, but I am happy to see the steel spline insert to prevent it from being crushed by the harder flywheel.

The 36 UDs at £1,469 are by no means cheap, but they do make carbon spoke wheels not only more accessible, but also more practical.

Perhaps the closest competitor is Cadex, which is owned by Giant, with 42 tubeless wheels. Like Hunts, these have carbon fiber spokes that can be refurbished and replaced, but they are much more expensive at £2,500.

Choosing steel bearings instead of CeramicSpeed will bring the price of 36 UD down to £1,149, bringing them closer to the Vision SC 40 (£969.90) or Hunt's own 36 Carbon Wides (£799). For an extra 350 pounds (excluding CeramicSpeed bearings), 36 UD carbon fiber spokes can bring higher stiffness, but it may be more important for racers to equip Hunt’s H_Care for full collision replacement, whether it’s In the crit track or bumps on the track, you can sit back and relax and dance upwards.

> Buyer's Guide: 58 best road bike and gravel bike wheels

Overall, the 36 UD feels like part of a new generation of rim brake wheels, optimized for wider tires, tubeless compatibility, significantly increased stiffness, while maintaining incredibly light weight, and Many negative effects associated with carbon fiber spokes are avoided.

For wheels of this caliber, the price seems fair, although I have to spend a long time seriously considering paying an extra £320 for CeramicSpeed bearings, even though they are already very good. Personally, considering the price, I would love to see a set of tubeless valves with added rim tape quality control check. Nevertheless, they are still a joy to ride, especially when facing hilly terrain.

Please note: these can only be ordered, the steel bearing option is delivered in September and the CeramicSpeed option is delivered in December.

Uncompromising, sturdy and lightweight wheels make riding fun

Brand and model: Hunt 36 UD carbon fiber spoke wheel set

Tell us the purpose of the wheel and the target audience. What is the manufacturer's comment on this? How does this compare to your own feelings?

Hunt said: "Compared with the equivalent steel spoke wheels, the 36 UD carbon spoke wheels have a 30.16% reduction in lateral bending, which is designed to provide you with a significant increase in stiffness and an impressive weight of less than 1300 grams. "This makes them ideal for climbers and road racers who want to gain an advantage in the race. Wheelsets are very fast, light and climb like a goat, helping to reduce the negative effects usually associated with carbon spokes, making them not only easier to achieve, but also more practical.

Tell us more about wheel technology?

Front: 16 radial spokes-aerodynamic profile

Rear: 21 spokes, 2 cross drive side and radial non-drive side

Including kebabs, brake blocks and rim tape

The lateral stiffness is 30.16% higher than the same steel spoke wheel

Very good! The stiffness is amazing. It is probably the hardest wheel I have ever used, including wheels from ENVE, Zipp, Roval, etc. The 7.5 degree hub engagement will only increase engagement and instant acceleration.

The steel spline insert should prevent premature wear of the hub, the carbon spokes can be replaced, and the wheelset also includes Hunt’s collision replacement parts. The only downside is that when replacing the spokes, they have to go back to Hunt, which may increase the downtime of the wheels compared to traditional steel spokes.

Does the wheel stay real? Is there any problem with being nervous?

How easy do you find to install tires?

Once the rim tape is replaced, the tire can easily continue to work and be in place with the crawler pump for the first time, which is very good.

What is the performance of wheel attachments (such as kebabs and rim tape)?

The quality of the skewers is high, but the tape does not seem to be sticky enough and does not stick well. I would also like to see tubeless valves included. Including brake shoes and good performance.

Tell us how the overall performance of the wheel is when used for its design purpose

Very good, very suitable for all-round wheels of various racing cars. I found them to perform well in road races and good enough for standard races on flat ground.

Tell us which aspects of the wheel you particularly like

The light weight and stiffness when climbing is amazing.

Tell us what aspects of the steering wheel you particularly dislike

A wheel must be reattached to use it without a tube.

How does the price compare to similar products on the market (including those tested recently on road.cc)?

We have not tested a lot of rim brake wheels recently, especially wheels with carbon spokes. Compared to similar products on the market mentioned in the comments, these products may be the closest to Cadex 42, which is about £1,000 more expensive.

Do you like to use the steering wheel? Yes

Would you consider buying wheels? Yes

Would you recommend wheels to friends? Yes

Use this box to explain your total score

Excellent performance and incredible stiffness while maintaining low weight. When considering carbon spokes, there are few common disadvantages, such as repairs and maintenance. Excluding the tubeless valve is a very small problem, but I hope that any tubeless tape on any wheel set can be applied correctly, especially at this price. In general, I like to test wheelsets, they are absolutely fast when climbing hills, and they are stable even on flat ground.
